Ember & Oak

Slow-roasted coffee, built by fire and oak.

We roast over a live flame and pull it on a bar carved from salvaged oak. Sit a while — the good stuff takes time.

Alberta Arts District, Portland. Open today until 7:00 pm.

Our story

Ember & Oak started in 2019 as a cart on the corner of 23rd and Alberta — one roaster, a stubborn belief that coffee tastes better when it's roasted over an actual flame, and a slab of oak salvaged from a torn-down barn in the Gorge.

That slab is now our bar. We still roast in small batches over fire, which is slower and a little unruly and absolutely worth it: it gives the beans a rounder, toastier sweetness you can't fake with hot air alone. Everything we pour starts with a roast you could have watched happen.

We're a neighborhood place first. That means we know the regulars' orders, we leave the good table open for whoever needs to sit and think, and we'd rather make one cup properly than ten in a hurry. Come in, stay as long as you like.
